big guns

..it’s the first time i’ve been up close with these kinds of ships so bear with me as i post more from the trip.. ;P

USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth completed ship named Alabama of the United States Navy, however she was only the third commissioned ship with that name. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. She retired in 1962. In 1964, Alabama was taken to Mobile Bay and opened as a museum ship the following year. The ship was added to the National Historic Landmark registry in 1986.

..if you’re a fan of these ships (or just like to gawk at them), i suggest you swing by Hess site, he’s doing a series on USS Lexington.. we’re having a “gun show”.. 😀

Yep; dramatic and cool effect this vintage color… Same for me, I do not know what would be in charge of this monster of steel. I think I would order to blast canons all the time…

The old school Koachrome / Insta-matic processing on this shot is very, very cool. I dig it. The shot angle/perspective is great as well…lends a bit of the scale of the ship to the eye. Nice one!

this is a nice series Rian. i would have gone there and seen not much to photograph – maybe a few rivets ; ) – but your images are really interesting and give a good sense of the power in the ship and the guns.
